ESA and Therapy Birds
In keeping with current guidelines and regulations, Avian Fashions now offers our customers two different bird patches: "ESA" (Emotional Support Animal) and "Therapy Bird". We no longer provide the "Service Animal" patch. Not only can birds provide affection and support to people in nursing homes, schools, etc., but they can also offer individual emotional support as a loving pet. There are important differences between the two designations and we provide a brief summary below.
Emotional Support Animal
An emotional support animal (ESA) is a person's pet that has been prescribed by a person's licensed therapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist (any licensed mental health professional). The animal is part of the treatment program for this person and is designed to bring comfort and minimize the negative symptoms of the person's emotional/psychological disability. No special training is required because ESA's are pets. Emotional Support Animals do have special privileges including travel on public transportation and they are also permitted in non-pet rental housing. However, the pet owner must obtain a special letter from a licensed mental health professional. We highly encourage you to research all the requirements necessary. If you are flying, check with the specific airline as they will require additional documentation.
The primary purpose of a Therapy Bird is to provide affection and comfort to people in hospitals, retirement homes, nursing homes, schools, hospices, disaster areas, and to people with learning difficulties. Therapy birds are privately owned and tend to visit facilities on a regular basis. Although therapy animals provide a very important therapeutic service to all kinds of people in need, they are not considered "service animals" and they and their handlers have no protections under federal law. However, some states afford therapy animals their handlers rights and protections. For more information on the Therapy Bird designation and to register your bird, please visit Pet Partners at www.petpartners.org.
We offer the two different patch options shown below. Because this is a custom order, please allow an extra 5-7 days. If you are unsure of the correct size for your bird, please take the following measurements as the ESA and THERAPY BIRD FLIGHTSUITS ARE NOT EXCHANGEABLE OR RETURNABLE. We highly recommend that this be purchased by repeat customers only.
- Measure around the whole bird (the girth) at the fattest part, but don't include the wings in the measurement (so go all the way around, but under the wings).
- Measure from the nape of the neck to where the tail feathers begin on the body.
